Illinois Residency Requirement: This position requires current Illinois residency to apply.

SIUE Police Services is conducting open recruitment and testing to develop an active candidate register for potential current and future Police Officer(s) vacancies.  The SIUE Police Department is a community-oriented law enforcement agency comprised of sworn police officers and civilian employees. SIUE police officers are certified law enforcement officers with full investigatory and arrest authority granted by Illinois law. The SIUE Police Department is open and accessible to the University community 24 hours a day and has its own telecommunication unit.  The SIUE Police Department strives to provide a safe and secure campus environment by: utilizing a community-oriented philosophy of policing; conducting routine, preventative patrols; and enforcing both the criminal and traffic statutes of the State of Illinois. 

SIUE Police Officers are responsible for performing general duty police work which includes the protection of life and property through enforcement of laws, ordinances, and University rules and regulations. Police Officers also provide service related needs for the University communities, such as vehicle lock-outs and safety escorts.  Routine duties for campus Police Officers can include but are not limited to:
- Patrol University communities (Edwardsville, East St. Louis and Alton) by car or on foot.
- Control and assist the movement of vehicles and pedestrian traffic by physically directing traffic.
- Respond to requests for non-enforcement service assistance to the University Communities.
- Identify, investigate, and report hazards that might endanger the public safety and/or University physical plant spaces or equipment.
- Assist other local law enforcement agencies as needed.

Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned in support of the department’s mission and goals.  Due to the professional responsibilities of this position, shift assignments and workdays will vary including weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Location assignments are based on University and department need but candidates must be able to work at all three campus locations: Edwardsville, East St. Louis, and Alton.

*Please note:
If an applicant has taken and passed the POWER Test at any of the following authorized testing facilities within the Power Test in the past 6 months AND has uploaded the NIPSTA’s Power Test ID card/certification, Joliet Junior College POWER Test ID card, Triton College’s POWER Test ID card or SWIC Power Test card, the institution may opt to waive Stage 1 SUCSS Physical Fitness Test. 

If an applicant informs HR at the time of application for a Police Officer posting that they have taken and passed the Physical Fitness Test at a State Universities Civil Service System employer, and Human Resources can confirm the applicant has passed the PFT within the past 6 months, the institution may choose to waive the SUCSS Police Officer Physical Fitness Test (Stage 1 Physical Fitness Test).

1. High school graduation or equivalent.
2. Possession of a valid driver’s license (must upload scan or photo copy of current license).
3. No record of conviction of a felony or misdemeanors as identified in the Illinois Police Training Act (50 ILCS 705 et seq.), or a crime involving moral turpitude.
4. Eligibility for bonding, if required by the employing institution.
5. Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Officers’ Training course as prescribed by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, if required by the employing institution. All recruit law enforcement officers who successfully complete this course after September 1, 1984 are required to successfully pass the Law Enforcement Officers’ Certification Examination. (Applicants lacking such training at time of appointment will be required to complete such requirement during, and as a part of, their probationary period of employment in this class.)
6. At least 21 years of age upon employment. (This requirement may be further defined by local recruitment, examination, and employment policies, provided age requirements have been met with regard to all other applicable state and federal regulations in this respect.)

NOTE: Persons who have not successfully completed the mandated firearm training course, as approved and recognized by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board, must complete the course during their probationary period. Police officers are not authorized to carry a service weapon until successfully completing such training.
